5 Ways I Control The Clutter Chaos in My Daughter’s Room

5 Ways I Control The Clutter Chaos in My Daughter’s Room

Here is everything used in her room: https://liketk.it/4nY34

My daughter has an amazing imagination. She sits in her room by herself and plays with her toys for hours. She has a LOT of toys which I don’t mind (because she actually plays with them) but we’ve been struggling to figure out the best way to store them. I needed to implement a process that was easy for her to handle on her own. Otherwise, cleaning her room always ended with tears and her begging me to help her. I think we’ve finally figured it out!

  1. Her Barbie Dream House doubles as a night stand. There really wasn’t much room to add more furniture so the “Barbie room” closest to her bed is where she stores her alarm clock, water, and remote control (yes, she has a tv in her room. I know that’ll be frowned upon by some but it works for us.)

2. We found this huge basket to store all of her stuffed animals. Before, they covered her bed or floor. This makes it easy for her to control the mess.

You can see how tall it is in relation to her below. It’s about 2 foot tall and 2 foot wide.

3. I mounted her own cork board on her wall at her level. She was actually using tape to hang up pictures she drew or her friends gave her. Now she has her own space that she can manage. She can display the art work that’s important to her and even switch it out seasonally if she chooses.

4. She has started to really enjoy reading lately. I mounted these book ledges and we keep seasonal books on the lower levels for her to easily grab. The remaining books are neatly arranged at the top of her closet. Every few weeks, we rotate them to keep her interest.

5. The biggest help in her room has to be the wire shelving and labeled bins/ baskets. She does have a cube storage cubby in her closet but she needed something for her larger toys. I like the fact that you can clearly see what is sitting on the shelves.

I asked her what are the top items that she plays with and that is how she labeled the storage bins. I figured the more control she had over this project, the more likely she’d be to stick with it. So far, it’s worked really well.

She does still use the cube bins but we’re down to only one “random” bin which is great since it used to be everything just randomly dumped into all of the bins. She definitely thrives in an organized space.

Again, she had full control of what she wanted to label each bin. Some were pretty specific and some, not so much…

I hope you found this helpful! Here are all of the items used in her room: https://liketk.it/4nY34

Client Entryway Upgrade

Client Entryway Upgrade

My client wanted to upgrade her space at the front door and make it feel more like an entryway. Originally, we tried to add a few cabinets for storage but there wasn’t enough space for it, unfortunately. We decided to do board and batten and add hooks for backpacks, purses, jackets, etc. She has two little ones so any organization is helpful.

Here is how it started:

Their walls are textured so I had to add backer board to the bottom half of the wall.

The backer board is 1/8″ thick so once I added it to the wall, the outlets were sunken in. I added these outlet extender clips (linked at the end) that worked perfectly.

Once the outlets were flush with the wall, I primed the backer board and added horizontal and vertical pieces of MDF.

This how it looked before wood filler and a lot of caulking.

It took about three coats of paint but it was worth it. We added the hooks and this is how it looks now. What do you think? I love the new lights!

Bathroom Upgrade

Bathroom Upgrade

It is not in our budget to fully remodel our guest bathroom right now but it is the one used by everyone that visits. I wanted to do a few cosmetic upgrades to make it a little prettier until we can fully remodel. Here is where it started…

Beige and boring, like most of the house. Eventually I’d like to replace the vanity and retile the shower but this is definitely an improvement until then.

I started with paint. I chose Pinecone Hill by Behr. I love how it turned out. Since it is such a dark color, it really helped the existing tile look more bright white. The beige seems to make the tile look dingy.

I also decided to remove the medicine cabinet. I wasn’t really sure what I was going to do once I removed it, I just knew I didn’t like the mirrored look. I really like how it turned out.

I also replaced the mirror and the light fixture. Not bad for a few cosmetic upgrades!

So, this is what we started with. Not terrible, it just needed a little TLC. They donated the old furniture and pressure washed the pavers. They have a really cool roofed area that was begging for a fun, outdoor chandelier. My client and I were all set to find something amazing but her husband made a really good point. We live in Florida and what they really needed was a ceiling fan. It’s not as aesthetically pleasing, but it is more practical and I wanted them to actually use the space. The fan won.

Here is the before…

And the after!

After the fan, all they needed was new furniture, a rug, and lots of plants!

Originally, we were going to get an umbrella for the table but now they are thinking of getting a pergola. If that happens, I’ll be sure to post updated pictures .

This plant basket came from Home Depot (linked here: https://rstyle.me/cz-n/gps594c6p4f ) and it is lined with plastic so it won’t leak.

We got the house painted!

We got the house painted!

When we bought the house last year, we knew we wanted to paint it. The stucco was brown, the trim and garage door was beige, and the door was orange. Brian painted the door black months ago because we couldn’t take the color anymore but it was more of a temporary solution as it wasn’t the right paint for a front door.

When we decided to paint, we got quotes from multiple companies and ended up choosing SHI, LLC. https://www.paintallstars.com/ They are a local company in Jacksonville that does drywall repair, popcorn ceiling removal, interior & exterior painting, and a whole lot more. I was very impressed by how quickly they were able to come give us a quote. Once we agreed on it, they were scheduled to start in two weeks and ended up doing it earlier.

They planned to pressure was the house, patch any cracks in the stucco, caulk & seal the windows, and finally paint. Isaac, the owner of the company, told me that the best way to paint stucco is to spray it first, then go back and roll it. They were scheduled to start on a Wednesday and said it could take 2-3 days. We received a call on that Sunday to see if they could pressure wash it then. I don’t know if you can tell from the picture but Aiden’s bearded dragon, Waffles, is watching them from the window. It was so funny to pull up to the house and see the guy staring back at him trying to figure out if he was real or not.

SHI, LLC only uses Sherwin Williams paint so we picked the below colors. They ended up painting on Tuesday, a day early which is unheard of nowadays. The weather cooperated with them so it only took a day! Coming from someone that painted their previous house all by herself, going to work with your house one color and coming home to it completely repainted is amazing!

Siding: Earl Grey

Trim & Garage Door: Extra White

Front Door: Tricorn Black

Here is one last look at before: (so much brown!)

And the after!

I think painting the garage door white made the biggest impact!

Here is the before of the back of the house…

And the after!

Besides some landscaping in the front yard, and decorating the back porch, the exterior is finished. I am so happy with the results! I can’t say enough nice things about SHI, LLC. They were professional, reasonably priced, very responsive, and even finished the job early. If you are local to Jax and are looking for a paint company (among other services), you should definitely check them out and tell them Kelley sent you!

We haven’t done anything to our bedroom since we moved in a year ago. It needed a little style.

I didn’t want our room to be super bright so I painted it a moody dark grey that actually looks green in different lighting. It’s the same color I used for the laundry room and office.

Side note: I don’t use painter’s tape or drop cloths when I paint. I like to live dangerously… and you can wipe dripped paint off of the baseboard and tile floor with a baby wipe.

We had the blackout curtains from the old house. They are phenomenal. It’s was so bright in the mornings that we couldn’t sleep past 7:30am on the weekends. Now it stays nice and dark until we open them.

I always add a plant when I redo a room, usually multiple plants. I had this little table and the snake plant. It just needed a basket for some texture. The bedding, pillows, and lamps are from Target.

Let’s talk rugs. The hubs wanted a big area rug under the bed but I just couldn’t. They are hundreds of dollars and if you think about it, most of the rug is not even visible. It’s just not worth it to me at this time. I got two runners for either side of the bed and called it a day.

Eventually, we will get a bench for the foot of the bed. Something with storage so we can put extra blankets, sheets, etc. in it but for now, I’m calling this room done!

The Shelves Are Done!

The Shelves Are Done!

And it only took 5 months! These shelves were one of those projects that took a lot longer than it should have. Life was so busy those months with work, Aiden’s baseball tournaments, and Aubrey’s dance recital. But we finally finished them.

This is how that wall looked when we moved in. After we cut the hole open we realized that there use to be a narrow arched doorway there. I don’t know why they would ever close that off.

This is how it looks now!

I love how much natural light is let into the living room now. That, with the lighter wall color, makes the space look much bigger. And I like having shelves to style.

This is how the dining room looked when we moved in. Beige and boring.

This is how it looks now! Much better, right? I painted the walls Swiss Coffee by Behr and it really helped to open up the space. I don’t care for the visual clutter of a gallery wall but this symmetric grid wall looks nice and orderly. I like how the photos bring just enough color to the space.

Picture Frames: https://amzn.to/3henLmz

Of course, I added a plant. I love how the green pops on that white wall.

Similar plant hooks: https://amzn.to/3BScQqh

I added curtains that I swear are green. I can not take a picture of them to show their true color. Every photo or video I take makes them look brown or purple but I swear they’re not!

I think the chandelier made the biggest impact. We plan to redo the kitchen soon and we aren’t sure exactly what finishes and fixtures we’re going to use. Since you can see the kitchen from the dining room, it didn’t make sense to spend the money on a new light that we may need to switch out again soon. So, I painted it! I used the same spray paint I used on the pitchers in the previous post. Getting rid of the gold light fixture made a big difference.

This chalkboard was on the front porch of our old house. I think it goes nicely in this room.

Accurate.
Dining Room Update

Dining Room Update

The dining room is coming along, slowly. I just painted one coat of Swiss Coffee by Behr on the walls. I love this color and it is going in most of the rooms in the house. It’s a nice, warm white. Almost cream, but not yellow or pink, if that makes any sense at all.

It will definitely need another coat but I am really excited to see how the room looks without the beige walls. It really makes the table pop. Oh, and speaking of the table…

This was it before:

This is her now:

Isn’t she gorgeous?! And don’t forget we got it for free! I still need to do the clear coat on the chairs and replace the fabric on the seats but so far, I’m in love. I used Black in Behr’s paint/primer in eggshell. I sanded the life out of the top and ended up not adding stain. I like the natural look so I just added a top coat for protection. The top coat I used was Varathane Ultimate Polyurethane in a crystal clear matte.

Here is how it looks against the lighter walls. That tray ceiling was a pain and it’s definitely going to need another coat but I really love it.

I ordered these curtains for the window. They are a dark, olive green. I will get a black curtain rod for them.

Next, I’m going to do a symmetrical gallery wall, like below. I will fill them with colorful pictures of us. I like the black and white look but the room is already going to be so monochromatic that I feel like it needs some color.

The missing piece to this whole puzzle is the light. I want black and somewhat minimalistic because you will see it through the shelves that we are working on. I don’t want it to be a big elaborate light. Nothing too fancy. Here is my mock-up for Instagram. I’m not in love with this light, I just wanted to see what the room would look like with a black light and it was the only option Instagram gave me. What do you think? Can you see my vision?

There isn’t a huge update this week. I plan on adding shelves on one wall but the other was looking pretty bare. I am a visual person and I like to have sticky notes with reminders, pictures from magazines that inspire me, etc. close by so I wanted some sort of cork board but I wanted it to look neat since it would be the only thing on this wall.

I found these hexagon cork tiles at Hobby Lobby. They come in a pack of 4 for $11.99.

I had these poster strips from a previous project so I used them to attach the tiles to the wall.

This is what I ended up doing. I like the way it came out. I didn’t want a plain old framed rectangle cork board. I wanted something that could be a wall feature because it looks nice, but also functional.

Next up:

  • Replace the ceiling fan
  • Add shelves over desk
  • Organize the office and find a place for everything
  • Decorate
  • Possibly replace the desk chair.
